Germany Job Seeker Visa from Ghana — 2026 Guide

Since June 2024, Ghanaians can apply for Germany's Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card) — a 12-month visa to enter Germany and look for work. It replaces the old "Job Seeker Visa" and uses a points-based system similar to Canada's Express Entry.

Last verified: November 2025 against the German Embassy Accra, BAMF and the Skilled Immigration Act (Fachkräfteeinwanderungsgesetz). See editorial policy.

Who qualifies — the 6-point rule

Proof of funds — the Sperrkonto (blocked account)

For 2026, the German Embassy in Accra requires a blocked account of EUR 12,324(EUR 1,027/month × 12 months) — roughly GHS 205,000. Open it before the appointment with one of: Expatrio, Fintiba, Coracle or Deutsche Bank. You may withdraw a maximum of EUR 1,027/month once in Germany.

Alternative: a notarised Verpflichtungserklärung (formal obligation letter) from a German resident, issued by their local Ausländerbehörde.

Document checklist (German Embassy Accra)

  • Two completed VIDEX long-stay forms, printed and signed.
  • Passport valid 12+ months, issued within last 10 years, 2 blank pages.
  • Three biometric photos (ICAO compliant, 35×45mm).
  • Recognised qualification — Anabin database entry OR ZAB Statement of Comparability (apply 3 months ahead, EUR 200).
  • CV in German or English (Europass format preferred).
  • Cover letter explaining job-search plan and target sector.
  • Proof of language: Goethe-Zertifikat (A1/A2/B1) or IELTS/TOEFL for English.
  • Blocked account confirmation (or Verpflichtungserklärung).
  • Travel health insurance covering 12 months in Germany.
  • Police clearance (Ghana Police Service — CID, GHS 300).
  • Visa fee: EUR 75 (≈ GHS 1,250), payable in cash at the embassy.

Appointment, processing & after arrival

  • Book via the German Embassy Accra appointment portal. Wait time: 2–4 months in 2025–26.
  • Decision time after submission: 6–12 weeks.
  • Once approved, the visa is valid 12 months — you may work up to 20 hrs/week part-time or do 2-week trial employment.
  • If you receive a job offer matching your qualification, convert to a Blue Card or §18a/b residence permit at the local Ausländerbehörde — no need to return to Ghana.

Common reasons applications fail

  1. Qualification not in Anabin / no ZAB statement. Without recognition you score 0 on the biggest points category.
  2. Under-funded blocked account. The threshold rises each year — check the embassy website 4 weeks before submitting.
  3. Weak job-search plan. A generic "I want to work in Germany" cover letter signals you have not researched your sector.
  4. Insurance gaps. Travel insurance must cover the full 12 months, not just the first 90 days.
