Spain Schengen Visa

Spain Schengen Visa from Ghana — BLS Accra Guide (2026)

Spain is the second-most applied-for Schengen destination by Ghanaians, after France. All applications go through BLS International in Accra (the Embassy of Spain in Ghana outsources visa intake). Approvals are strong when the file is consistent — this guide walks through fees, documents and the Madrid-vs-Barcelona itinerary rules.

Last verified: November 2025 against Embassy of Spain in Accra and BLS Spain Visa Ghana published fee schedules. See our editorial policy.

When to apply at Spain (and when to apply elsewhere)

The Schengen Code requires you to apply at the embassy of your main destination — measured by nights spent, not order of entry. Apply at Spain if:

  • Most of your trip is in Spain (Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Mallorca, Tenerife, Valencia).
  • Your nights are split evenly across countries AND your first entry is into Spain (e.g. flying KLM via Amsterdam to Madrid still counts Spain if Madrid is your first overnight).
  • You're attending an event hosted by a Spanish institution (FITUR, MWC Barcelona, IESE Business School).

If most of your stay is in France, apply at the French embassy via VFS — see our general Schengen visa from Ghana guide for that route.

Fees (GHS) and processing time

  • Visa fee (adult): €90 ≈ GHS 1,400, paid at BLS in cedis.
  • Children 6–12: €45.
  • BLS service charge: GHS 480 per applicant.
  • Optional courier return: GHS 120 (Accra), GHS 220 (Kumasi / Takoradi).
  • Processing: 15 calendar days standard, up to 45 days in peak July–September.
  • No premium / fast-track service is offered by the Spanish embassy in Accra in 2026.

Document checklist

  1. Schengen visa application form, signed (download from BLS portal).
  2. Ghanaian passport, valid 3+ months beyond your return date, with at least 2 blank pages.
  3. Two photos: 35 × 45 mm, white background, ICAO-compliant.
  4. Confirmed return flight reservation (do not pay for tickets yet).
  5. Hotel bookings (Booking.com confirmations are accepted) covering every night of the trip.
  6. Travel insurance: €30,000+ medical and repatriation covering all Schengen states (AXA, Allianz Travel, Old Mutual Ghana all issue compliant policies).
  7. Bank statements: last 6 months, stamped by Ecobank, Stanbic, GCB, Fidelity or Absa.
  8. Employment letter: salary, position, start date, approved leave dates, contact details of HR.
  9. Pay slips for last 3 months.
  10. Business owners: Registrar General incorporation certificate, GRA tax clearance, 6 months of business statements.
  11. Cover letter (1 page) explaining your itinerary day-by-day and purpose of trip.
  12. Old passports with previous Schengen / UK / US / Canada visas — strongest evidence of return intent.

How to apply step by step

  1. Register on the BLS Spain Visa Ghana portal.
  2. Choose visa category — usually Short Stay – Tourism.
  3. Book an appointment slot at BLS Office, Liberation Road, Airport Residential Area, Accra.
  4. Print the appointment letter and assemble your documents in the order BLS specifies.
  5. Attend in person — biometrics (fingerprints + photo) are captured. Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprints.
  6. Pay the visa fee and service charge at the BLS counter (cash or card).
  7. Track your application by reference number; passport is returned to BLS for collection or courier delivery.

Top refusal reasons (Article 32, Visa Code)

  • Article 32(1)(a)(vii) — Insufficient funds: bank statements showing balances under €60–80 per day of stay.
  • Article 32(1)(b) — Doubt about intent to leave: no employment letter, no property, no family ties.
  • Inconsistent itinerary: flights and hotels don't line up with the cover letter.
  • Wrong embassy: applying at Spain when 70%+ of nights are in France or Italy.
  • Read the EU Visa Code (Regulation 810/2009) for the full refusal grounds list.
