Ghana Card Registration, Replacement & Update — 2026 Guide
The Ghana Card is now the single source of truth for Ghanaian identity. Since 2022, the Ghana Card PIN replaces the old TIN at GRA, is mandatory to open a bank account, and is required for every passport application or renewal. If your card is lost, damaged or has the wrong details, fixing it should be your first step before applying for any visa abroad.
Last verified: November 2025 against the National Identification Authority (NIA, nia.gov.gh) fee schedule and premium-centre service list. See editorial policy.
Who needs to register
- Every Ghanaian citizen aged 6 and above, whether resident in Ghana or abroad.
- Permanent residents and qualifying foreign nationals (separate Non-Citizen Card).
- Ghanaians in the diaspora register at Ghana's missions abroad where NIA has set up biometric kits (London, New York, Washington DC, Toronto, plus a growing list).
First-time registration — what to bring
- Birth certificate (original + photocopy). If lost, use the certified copy from Births & Deaths Registry.
- Alternative ID if no birth certificate: Ghanaian passport, voter ID, or a sworn affidavit from a Commissioner of Oaths plus two guarantors with valid Ghana Cards.
- Parent's Ghana Card if you are between 6 and 15.
- For naturalised citizens: certificate of naturalisation.
- First-time registration is free at any NIA district office.

Why this matters for passport and visa applications
- Passport application: The Ghana Card is mandatory. The Passport Office pulls your bio-data directly from the NIA database — any mismatch in name, date of birth or place of birth will freeze your application.
- Schengen, UK and US visas: Embassies increasingly ask for the Ghana Card as a secondary ID to confirm residence and tie a Ghanaian applicant to their home country.
- Banking and SIM: No Ghana Card means no new bank account, no mobile money upgrade and no SIM registration — all of which generate the financial paper trail visas require.
Fixing common Ghana Card problems
- Wrong name spelling: Bring your birth certificate or passport plus a statutory declaration if names differ. Book the "biographic update" service.
- Card rejected by bank or SIM agent: Verify on idcheck.nia.gov.gh — if your card status is "blocked" or "not found", visit any NIA office for revalidation (free).
- Lost card abroad: Report to the nearest Ghanaian Mission. They issue a replacement that you collect on your next visit home, or by courier where the mission supports it.
- Expired card (15-year validity): Begin renewal 6 months before expiry. The card number stays the same.
