Schengen Visa from Ghana — 2026 Guide
A Schengen visa lets you travel across 29 European countries on one sticker. From Ghana, you apply at the embassy (or its outsourced visa centre — VFS Global, TLScontact or BLS) of the country that is your main destination. Picking the wrong embassy is the single most common reason Ghanaian applications get rejected at the counter.
Last verified: November 2025 against the EU Visa Code (Reg. 810/2009), VFS Ghana and the consular sections of the French, German and Dutch embassies in Accra. See editorial policy.
Which embassy do I apply to?
EU Visa Code Article 5 says you apply to the country that is either:
- Your main destination — where you'll spend the most nights, OR
- If nights are equal, your first point of entry into the Schengen area.
Common mistake: applying to "the easiest" embassy. Officers cross-check your itinerary, hotel bookings and flight reservations. If you applied to France but you're staying 5 nights in France and 7 in Italy, the application will be refused as incorrectly lodged.

| Netherlands | VFS Global | Accra Financial Centre |

Cost and timeline
- Visa fee: EUR 90 (≈ GHS 1,500). Children 6–12: EUR 45. Under 6: free.
- VFS / TLScontact service fee: EUR 30–45 (≈ GHS 500–750).
- Standard processing: 15 calendar days from biometric submission.
- Extended: up to 45 days during peak season (May–August). Apply at least 4 weeks before travel; the rules allow up to 6 months ahead.
Documents (standard short-stay)
- Completed Schengen visa application form (printed and signed).
- Passport valid 3+ months beyond return date, with 2 blank pages.
- Two recent biometric photos (35×45mm, white background, ICAO compliant).
- Confirmed round-trip flight reservation (not paid ticket — use a reservation service).
- Accommodation booking for every night of the trip.
- Travel medical insurance covering EUR 30,000+, valid in all Schengen states.
- Bank statements (last 3–6 months) stamped by your bank, showing approx EUR 50–100 per day of stay.
- Employment letter with leave dates and salary, or business registration.
- Cover letter explaining the trip itinerary day-by-day.
Most common refusal reasons (codes on the rejection slip)
- Reason 2: Purpose and conditions of stay not justified. Vague itinerary or unrealistic plans.
- Reason 3: Insufficient means of subsistence. Bank balance too low for trip length.
- Reason 7: Information on purpose not reliable. Inconsistent dates between flights, hotel and form.
- Reason 9: Travel medical insurance not valid. Coverage below EUR 30,000 or not valid across all Schengen states.
- Reason "intention to leave": The catch-all. Weak ties to Ghana + close relatives already in Europe = high refusal risk.
Schengen refusals have a right of appeal (unlike UK visitor visas). The appeal goes to the issuing country's domestic court — for France, the Commission de recours contre les décisions de refus de visa in Nantes — within 30 days of the refusal.
